La Liga Results - League's Structure and Scoring Patterns
When you take a look at the results from La Liga, one thing that jumps out is just how much the league is defined by teams being evenly matched, rather than big swings from one team to another in terms of scoring. It's a pretty stark contrast to leagues like the Premier league, where you see even more of a swing from team to team.
If we take a look at the internal results data we've got here at OddsRun, what we see with La Liga is:
- Average goals per match: 2.65 - a number that really tells us something about this league
- Draw rate: 25.5% - a pretty standard draw rate but one that still gives us a clue about the sort of football being played
- BTTS: 54.5% - that's a pretty high rate of both teams scoring
- Over 2.5 goals: 49.3% - while we do see some high-scoring games, they're not the norm
- Over 3.5 goals: 24.4% - these games are a bit more rare
- 0:0 frequency: 4.4% - which is to say that clean sheets do happen but aren't super common
- Favourite win rate (decided matches): 83.5% - a pretty high rate of favourite wins in games where the favourite ends up winning
- Most common scoreline: 1:1 (15.6%) - which is a way of saying that most matches are pretty evenly contested
The Scoreline Patterns We See in La Liga
The fact that 1:1 is the most common scoreline really gives us a sense of just how evenly matched this league is. Most games are pretty tactical and closely fought, rather than the high-scoring affairs you sometimes see in other leagues.
When we look at things like the distribution of scores, what we see is:
- Most games are either 0-2 goals, or 3 or fewer goals.
- High-scoring games, where we see four or more goals, aren't super rare but they're also not the norm.
- Clean sheets do happen, but matches that end 0:0 are pretty rare.
What we see in La Liga is a pretty centred distribution of scores, with most games falling in the 2-3 goal range. This tells us a lot about the style of football being played in the league - with a focus on ball control and building from the back.
Favourite Dominance vs Draw Compression
While La Liga does produce a fair number of draws, it also shows a strong favourite win rate - in games where one team is clearly better than the other, we see a pretty high rate of favourite wins.
With an 83.5% favourite win rate in non-drawn games, what that tells us is that when one team is clearly better than the other, that team is likely to win. However, the fact that we see so many draws (25.5% of games end in a draw) also tells us that the league is pretty tightly contested, and that teams are often evenly matched.
Tactical Identity Reflected in Results
When we look at the results from certain clubs like:
- Real Madrid
- FC Barcelona
- Atlético Madrid
we can see that some teams are definitely having more of an impact on the scoring patterns in the league - with those teams contributing to a more high-scoring league at the top end. However, even with those teams in the mix, the league as a whole is pretty conservative - with most games being closely contested and not particularly high-scoring.
This sort of dual structure, where we see elite teams scoring a lot but the rest of the league being pretty conservative, is a big part of what defines the statistical identity of La Liga.
How This Data Was Compiled
All the percentages and numbers that we see above are taken from OddsRun's internal results database - using official final scores and a standardised classification methodology.
Our goal with this data is to give us a better understanding of the underlying structure of the league - rather than just looking at short-term performance.
