LNB Pro A Standings, The League Table & How It Works

The France Ligue A (Betclic Elite) table is a reflection of the top level French basketball league - which league isn't of course, but you get the gist - the French top division. Teams compete all season to make the playoffs, with the standings working out the order of teams by wins & loses, and just generally how well they're doing.

At the top of the table you'll usually find a few super-elite programs who are always going to be jostling for the top spot. For example, AS Monaco Basket and ASVEL - they're two of the top teams in the league. And then there's the likes of Nanterre 92, Strasbourg IG, Limoges CSP - these teams are always going to be in with a shout of making the playoffs and affecting the balance of the league.

The Regular Season

The league has a schedule where everyone plays everyone else home and away - that keeps the competition nice and even right throughout the year.

So here's how the standings are worked out:

  • How many wins and losses you've got
  • Who you beat when you met them
  • How many points you scored compared to how many you let in

That last one - point differential - is pretty important because the average margin of victory is about 12 or 13 points, so it can make all the difference when two teams are tied on wins and losses.

Playoffs

At the end of the regular season, the top teams in the league go into the playoffs to see who'll be the league champion. And in the playoffs, the higher seeded teams get to play at home - which can make all the difference because the home team win about 59% of the time in this league.

How the Table Shapes Up

The standings usually end up looking like this:

  • The top teams like Monaco & ASVEL they tend to be winning & have a good point differential.
  • The teams around mid-table are fighting it out for the playoff spots which keeps the competition nice & tight in the middle of the table.
  • The lower teams are struggling to keep up on the defensive end.

This all makes for a really competitive league where the top teams can pull clear at the top, but there's still everything to play for all the way down the table.
